What You Need to Build a Golf Simulator: A Step-by-Step Breakdown

As the seasons change and outdoor golf becomes less accessible, many players turn indoors to keep their games sharp. Simulator season is the perfect time to practice year-round, experience world-class courses, and enjoy golf with friends no matter the weather.
With FlightScope’s range of launch monitors and simulation partners, building your own setup for home or business use has never been easier. Here’s everything you need to know about building a golf simulator:
How Do Golf Simulators Work?
The magic of a golf simulator lies in the seamless coordination of a series of core components, which transform a swing into a digital ball flight in real-time.
1. The Launch Monitor:
-
This is the most critical part of the entire system. FlightScope launch monitors, including the Mevo Gen2, Mevo+, and X3C, utilize patented Fusion Tracking Technology – a unique combination of radar and camera – to directly measure dozens of key metrics in milliseconds.
-
The raw data captured by the launch monitor is the information used to accurately calculate and display the ball’s trajectory on the virtual course or driving range. All FlightScope launch monitors come standard with lifetime ownership of an E6 Connect simulation bundle, meaning you can start playing simulation golf using just your launch monitor and an iPad or Windows PC right out of the box – with no license fees or monthly subscriptions.
2. Impact Screen or Net:
-
The screen serves a dual purpose: it acts as a durable canvas for the projected image and safely stops your golf ball (even full-speed drives).
-
For a true simulator experience, a screen is necessary. If you are focused only on data or you are willing to rather play simulation golf using just your iPad or PC, a simple net can suffice.
3. Projector:
-
The projector displays the virtual driving range or golf simulator courses onto the impact screen, creating an immersive experience. Short-throw projectors are usually recommended for home setups to minimize shadows.
4. Hitting Mat:
-
A quality hitting mat provides a stable, realistic surface to hit from, protecting your clubs and reducing strain on your joints. Look for dense, durable mats that accept a real tee.
5. Landing Pads (Optional):
-
A landing pad is a section of artificial turf that fills the gap between your hitting mat and impact screen. It protects hard surfaces by preventing golf balls from bouncing around your space, while giving your simulator setup a more polished, cohesive look.

Recommended Golf Balls for Simulation Golf
We recommend using a metallic sticker on your golf ball (you will receive a pack of 100 with your FlightScope unit), or Titleist RCT balls (Radar Capture Technology) for optimal indoor performance. These are not required but they do ensure you get the most accurate spin measurements indoors.
How Much Room Do You Need For a Golf Simulator?
One of the most important considerations before starting your simulator build is ensuring your space meets both swing clearance and launch monitor tracking requirements.
Ceiling Height:
The ideal ceiling height is what you would feel comfortable with swinging your driver – which will differ from person to person depending on your height and swing arc.
As a general rule, we would recommend an absolute minimum of 9ft, while 10-12ft is typically an ideal height for a comfortable, full-swing experience, especially for taller players.
Launch Monitor Space:
All FlightScope units require at least 16ft of space (total depth). This includes 8ft behind the ball, and 8ft from the ball to the net/screen.
General Room Size:
For a comfortable, full-swing experience, a room size of at least 12ft W x 10ft H x 16ft L is recommended.
