A Historic Fist Pump Echoes at Bellerive

The Gary Player International Golfer of the Year Award presented by FlightScope honors global legacy with a statuette of Player’s iconic victory.

ORLANDO, Fla. – The world’s best golfers battle it out this weekend at the prestigious Bellerive Country Club, the setting of one of Gary Player’s most iconic wins. That victory is perfectly encapsulated atop the trophy for the Gary Player International Golfer of the Year Award, presented by FlightScope in partnership with the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). The trophy and award itself serve as a standard of excellence and symbol of dedication from Gary Player, GCAA and FlightScope to the next generation of golfers.

In 1965, Gary Player defeated Kel Nagle in a playoff to win his fourth major. With that victory, Gary Player became just the third golfer in history and first non-American player to complete the career grand slam. The achievement cemented his place in golf history and was just the start of what would become Player’s global legacy.

Today, Player’s legacy continues through the Gary Player International Golfer of the Year Award presented by FlightScope. The award honors five outstanding collegiate golfers from outside the United States, one each for NCAA Divisions I, II and III, as well as NAIA and NJCAA. The award’s trophy carries a special connection to Player’s historic victory at Bellerive. The statuette atop the trophy recreates Player’s iconic celebration following his 1965 win.

• Division I: Christiaan Maas of University of Texas (South Africa)
• Division II: Octavio Laurent of University of South Carolina Beaufort (France)
• Division III: Alvin Su of University of Rochester (China)
• NAIA: Iver Sokhan-Sanj of Keiser University (Norway)
• NJCAA: Abe Bignell of McLennan Community College (England)

Reigning U.S. Amateur Championship, Jack Whaley is a notable 2025 recipient.
